Sports… National Football Coach resigns

The national coach of the Montserrat Football Association (MFA) incorporated has resigned.

Kenneth Dyer tendered his resignation in a letter to the MFA dated April 15th, 2013. The decision takes effect May 31st, 2013.

Speaking to ZJB Sports, Coach Dyer says for some time now he has been disappointed with the administration of the game here and the way it has deteriorated since he took up the job back in 2008. Continue reading

Antigua takes first and second place in 3rd Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon

 

The race began in Lookout in front of the St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church.

BRADES, Montserrat – Two Antiguan runners took home the first and second place prizes at the 3rd Annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon this past Saturday.
The first place at this year’s Volcano Half Marathon race, hosted by the Montserrat Running Club was won by Antigua runner Andre Simon in a time of 1:35:29. Second place was taken by Simon’s teammate and returning runner, Germain Brann (1:41:38, Antigua), and third place went to Montserrat’s Omar Jarrett (1:45:20), who won last year’s Fun Run race.
In all, 20 athletes took part in this year’s race with 19 finishing, all in very respectable time for the gruelling 13.1-mile course. More than half of the runners had travelled to Montserrat from overseas especially to take part in what has fast become one of Montserrat’s most prestigious events. Continue reading

Pamenos Ballantyne Winning the 2nd Volcano Half Marathon

Big cash prizes for winners at Saturday’s Volcano Half Marathon

BRADES, Montserrat – The 3rd Annual Montserrat Volcano Half Marathon, and accompanying fun run and walk, takes place this coming, Saturday 26 November. The Montserrat Running Club today announced more new prizes, including a Blackberry for the fastest half marathon runner aged under 20, and a prize for the fastest resident.
The Fun Run and Walk races start at 6 am at Cudjoe Head – people can register for free on the morning from 5.30am.
The Volcano Half Marathon also starts at 6am at Lookout Catholic Church, and runners must register by Wednesday 23rd November. Registration forms can be obtained from the Tourist Board, or by visiting www.volcanorunner.com. Continue reading

Min. of Sports wants to see more national teams developed

BRADES, Montserrat – Minister with responsibility for Sports, the Honourable Colin Riley has made several recommendations to aid in the development of football in Montserrat.

Riley was speaking at the recent ‘Meeting of the Minds’ discussion held at the Lyme in Brades, in which he said “I believe we can look at the Sports programming variable in Montserrat by taking an assessment of several things which are value creating and which add to the sporting culture.”

“We need to put some more emphasis on the development of facilities, we should design and implement school and community based youth programmes, develop a culture of professional coaching, work on our referees and officials and it is absolutely important that we bring women into the game,” Riley suggested. The LYME hosts Meeting of the Minds on local football

BRADES, Montserrat – Development of Football, management of sporting bodies and sports tourism were some of the areas discussed at the ‘Meeting of the Minds’ Monday night at The Lyme in Brades.

One of the panelists, Roy Greaves, spoke about the recent match between Montserrat and Belize which should have been played in Montserrat but instead took place in Trinidad.

Mr. Greaves said he “conducted some research both online and among various persons associated with football in Montserrat and was told there has not been a football league in at least five years”.

“Upon further research I discovered that we had the possibility of playing a match against Belize here but it did not happen and Montserrat’s ‘home match’ is in Couva, Trinidad,” he further stated. Continue reading

KPMG auditing Montserrat Football Association

BRADES, Montserrat – Auditors from accounting firm KPMG are on island carrying out an audit of the Montserrat Football Association, MFA.

When contacted by ZJB News, President Vincent Cassell confirmed that the appraisal is scheduled and will assess the associations need for funding for several projects in the pipeline.

These projects he said include completion of stands at the football stadium and a three story building that will include a conference hall, administrative section and a gym. Continue reading
