Antigua & Barbuda Police Band for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Parade on Montserrat

BRADES, Montserrat – The Antigua & Barbuda Police Band are scheduled to be on island Thursday in preparation for Saturday’s parade in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The band last performed at a parade in 2009 and they are expected to give a concert following the formal segment of the morning event.

All of the uniformed bodies on Montserrat, including the Royal Montserrat Police Service, Royal Montserrat Defense Force, Girl Guides, and Red Cross are expected to participate in the event expected to start at 8:30am at Salem Park. Continue reading

Governor’s Office releases A Visitor’s Guide to Consular Services

BRADES, Montserrat – The Governor’s Office, in collaboration with the Deputy Governor’s Office and the Royal Montserrat Police Service recently launched a leaflet entitled “Welcome to Montserrat: A Visitor’s Guide to Consular Services.”
The guide is issued to all first time arrivals and those who have not visited Montserrat for a few years. It explains who to turn to in the event of an emergency. Continue reading

Premier Meade says MCAP is delivering for Montserrat

BRADES, Montserrat – The Honourable Premier Reuben T. Meade says his administration continues to deliver the goods to put Montserrat on the path to self sustainability.

In a statement released today, Premier Meade said the Government of Montserrat has satisfied all the conditions established for the approval of the single programming document with the European Union, which he signed on Tuesday along with Ambassador Valeriano Diaz, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean.

The EU will give Montserrat 55.9 million Eastern Caribbean Dollars under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) programme towards its capital development programme.

“It is the culmination of discussions and negotiations with the EU which was finally agreed in February 2012 during our most recent visit to Brussels. The funds have been allocated to the Port Development Project and Little Bay Development. The total allocation is 15.6M Euros to be disbursed in three tranches. In order to facilitate the draw down one of the targets to be met is the signing of a construction contract for the port project by mid June of 2013. Continue reading

OCT Leaders Conclude Ministerial Conference

BRUSSELS, Belgium The leaders of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) have concluded their annual Overseas Countries and Territories Association (OCTA) Ministerial Conference in preparation for the 10th OCT-EU Forum on 24 January 2012. OCTA Chairman, the Honourable Premier Reuben Meade of Montserrat, chaired the meeting which focused on the European Union’s (EUs) revision of the 2011 Overseas Association Decision (OAD).

During the programme, OCT Leaders heard presentations from experts on OCT relations, environment and trade; and also shared their own perspectives on future relations with the EU. The meeting concluded with the leaders agreeing to common positions for talks with the EU Commission (Commission) and the signing of a Political Declaration. Reuben T. Meade becomes Montserrat’s First Premier

His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis administers the oath to new Premier of Montserrat Reuben T. Meade on Tuesday September 27, 2011.

BRADES, Montserrat – The Hon. Reuben T. Meade was sworn in earlier today as the first Premier of Montserrat which also signalled the island’s adoption of a new constitution, which he acknowledged was not a perfect document.
“We must continue the work of improving the document over time. We must however, not lose sight of the focus on development issues while at the same time honouring the provisions of the constitution,” Meade told those gathered for the short ceremony at the Cultural Centre.
His Excellency the Governor, Adrian Davis, who officiated at the ceremony, said he was pleased that this new constitution was coming into effort this early in his appointment and that it was a “modern constitution for a modern country.” He added that the UK government was not considering any amendments at this time to the document which new Opposition Leader Hon. Donaldson Romeo and Opposition Member Hon. Lowell Lewis have challenged and declared less than adequate for Montserrat. Continue reading

Chief Minister Meade Congratulates New CARICOM Head

BRADES, Montserrat – Congratulations and best wishes have been extended to the incoming head of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from the Chief Minister of Montserrat, Hon. Reuben T. Meade.
On Tuesday, the Office of the Chief Minister sent the following statement to the new the Secretary General of CARICOM, H.E. Ambassador Irwin Larocque.

Chief Minister Meade, Caribbean Prime Ministers, officials walk to keep fit in St. Kitts

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (CUOPM) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister and Chairman of the Caribbean Community, the Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas and several of his regional colleagues braved inclement weather early Saturday morning on the annual walk during the Heads of Government Conference.

Dr. Douglas who is also CARICOM’s lead spokesman on Health, HIV/AIDS and Human Resource Development was accompanied Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Baldwin Spencer; St. Lucia’s Prime Minister, Hon. Stephenson King; Grenada’s Prime Minister, Hon. Tillman Thomas; Chief Minister of Montserrat, the Hon. Reuben Meade, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sen. Dr. the Hon. Government’s focus is building the economic infrastructure, says Chief Minister Meade

BRADES, Montserrat – Chief Minister, the Hon. Reuben T. Meade told members of the Legislative Council that the government was focused on building the economic infrastructure and not population growth.

The chief minister was answering a question from Opposition Member, the Hon. Donaldson Romeo who wanted to know what steps the Government were taking to increase the island’s population over the next 10 years. Continue reading

Montserrat prepares to host 70th Meeting of the Monetary Council

BRADES, Montserrat – Montserrat is preparing to host the 70th Meeting of the Monetary Council of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) scheduled for July 15 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre. At this meeting, Chief Minister the Hon. Reuben T. Meade will also take over chairmanship of the ECCU.
Heads of Government and representatives from the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) are scheduled to arrive on Thursday, July 14 and be hosted at a special reception at Government House with His Excellency the Governor Adrian Davis.
During a short handover ceremony at 9am on Friday, July 15, Chief Minister Meade will take over from Grenada’s Minister of Finance, Hon. V. Nazim Burke as Chairman of the Monetary Council. Continue reading

Case Study on Montserrat’s Aid for Trade being discussed at WTO

BRADES, Montserrat – Montserrat’s Case Study on the implementation of the ASYCUDA World, customs system was discussed at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Workshop on Thursday in Geneva.

Director of Regional Affairs & Trade Claude Hogan submitted the case study back in January to show how and why the implementation of the new customs system was necessary. Montserrat, Anguilla and Turks & Caicos benefited from 169,000 Euros from the European Community to upgrade to the latest version of the Automated Systems Customs Data, ASYCUDA World. Continue reading
