Montserrat Festival 50 honours key figures in its cultural history

LITTLE BAY, Montserrat – More than 50 people were honoured last evening at the final event on the Montserrat Festival 50 calendar. The festival committee paid tribute to past queens, calypsonians and community

leaders and organisations who supported the annual celebration which turned 50 in 2012.

The red carpet affair organised by Yvette-Ryan and her team was hosted by Shirley Osborne, daughter of the late chief minister Dr. John A. Osborne and George “JGP” Piper, radio personality on the Caribbean SuperStation. Continue reading

ESTIVAL CITY, Montserrat – Herman ‘Cupid’ Francis added a fourth calypso monarch crown to his credit after delivering two incredible performances at the 50th cultural festival celebrations Calypso Finals on Montserrat last night.

Cupid, who also serves as the Head of the Department of Culture and one of the island’s leading song writers and music instructors also nabbed four of the eight special prizes along with the EC$15,000 cash prize for the winner. Continue reading

FESTIVAL CITY, Montserrat – Chrystal Beckles of Barbados reigned supreme over a group of talented female calypsonians to take the 2nd Euphony Vibes Regional Female Calypso title.

The competition was one of the major events on Montserrat’s Festival 50 calendar which runs until January 1, 2013.

Beckles performed sixth in each round singing two songs she wrote and arranged herself. In the first round she powerfully delivered Fly on the Wall and in the second, Forgive de Caribbean. Continue reading

Alliouagana Festival of the Word to focus on film and Festival 50 this December

BRADES, Montserrat – Writers and screenwriters will explore the journey From Script to Screen at the fourth edition of the Alliouagana Festival of the Word (AFW) this December on Montserrat. The AFW in collaboration with HAMA Productions of Antigua & Barbuda will be hosting a film festival and workshops at the Montserrat Cultural Centre in Little Bay on December 8 and 9, 2012.

The Alliouagana Festival of the Word is joining forces with the Montserrat Festival Committee in celebrating the 50th Cultural Festival here. AFW has moved its activities from the customary mid-November period to capture and entertain Montserratians returning early for the Christmas celebrations and to heighten awareness of the Alliouagana Festival of the Word in the Diaspora. Troy Piper is LIME Montserrat’s winner to see Rihanna in Barbados

SWEENEYS, Montserrat – Troy Piper will be heading to Barbados to see superstar songtress Rihanna live in concert as LIME Montserrat’s winner in the text to win promotion held in July.

LIME Montserrat was part of the regional Text to Win campaign to select winners from each territory, where the telecommunications giant serves, to get a VIP experience in Barbados to see Rihanna perform on Friday, August 5.

Rihanna is presently on the LOUD tour for her fifth studio album of the same name and this is the first time she will be performing at home since attaining international acclaim.

“We are very excited about this opportunity for Troy and his guest,” said Joseph Cassell, General Manager of LIME Montserrat. “Troy will be a guest of LIME in Barbados and will receive travel and hotel accommodations, along with two VIP Concert tickets.” Continue reading

SWEENEY’S Montserrat – Professional Musician, Lecturer and PhD candidate at York University in Toronto Canada, Paul Ormandy is here conducting a fact finding mission into Montserrat’s music.

He is interested in learning about the similarities and or differences, between traditional and popular music, created by local musicians in Montserrat as well as changes to local music and related culture in the years following the volcanic disaster. Continue reading

SWEENEY’S, Montserrat – Writer and Director of The Skin, Howard Allen and his wife and Executive Director Mitzi Allen were at the ZJB Studios this morning to talk about their feature film which opens tonight at the Montserrat Cultural Centre.

Howard who’s father is Montserratian said they are always happy when they can come back to share their work. His wife Mitzi, added that Montserrat was very special to them as it was where they celebrated their honeymoon 19 years ago. Government looking at outsourcing festival events

BRADES, Montserrat – The Government is looking at plans to outsource some of the sub committees for the major events of the year end festival.

This forms part of the restructuring process taking place within the Department of Culture leading up the 50th anniversary of festival in 2012.

Parliamentary Secretary responsible for Culture and Festivals, the Honourable Jermaine Wade says groups or individuals will be invited to submit proposals to manage and organize the shows.

“We are looking at the possibility of persons or groups or individuals coming forward and saying well I believe I can deliver a quality show and present a package to government and we will perhaps give you a two year contract to run with it. That’s a consideration that possibly will become fruitful and I believe that might be a major development leading up to 2012.” Continue reading

Cecile coming for LIME Montserrat opening of its Flagship

SWEENEYS, Montserrat – Joseph Cassell, General Manager of LIME Montserrat announced Thursday that one week from today will be the grand opening of its new administrative building and retail store.

LIME, which has served Montserrat for over 85 years, has been using temporary quarters since the volcanic crisis. In late 2010, it broke ground at Sweeney’s on a permanent building which is to house the commercial and technical departments of the telecommunications giant. Continue reading
