Montserrat Festival 50 honours key figures in its cultural history

LITTLE BAY, Montserrat – More than 50 people were honoured last evening at the final event on the Montserrat Festival 50 calendar. The festival committee paid tribute to past queens, calypsonians and community

leaders and organisations who supported the annual celebration which turned 50 in 2012.

The red carpet affair organised by Yvette-Ryan and her team was hosted by Shirley Osborne, daughter of the late chief minister Dr. John A. Osborne and George “JGP” Piper, radio personality on the Caribbean SuperStation. Continue reading

MSS Alumni Association makes donation to their alma mater

mss 057BRADES, Montserrat – Alumni of the Montserrat Secondary School on Thursday presented much-needed supplies to the school as part of their bi-annual get together during Montserrat’s Festival 50 celebrations.

Dorette Harris, president of the registered charity, which comprises of former students of the island’s sole high school, said last year the association received a list of items needed by each department. “We asked them to prioritise the needs and went about acquiring the items at the top. In the year ahead we plan to tackle all of the items on the list until it is completed.” Continue reading

Coordinator of Culture lauds COGOP Songfest Competition

LITTLE BAY, Montserrat – Coordinator of Culture Herman ‘Cupid’ Francis is lauding the talent and creativity displayed at the recent Songfest organised by the Church of God of Prophecy, calling the standard “very high.”
Songfest is the church’s annual original composition show now in its fifth year. Nineteen young people competed in the event held at the Montserrat Cultural Centre on Friday, December 7, 2012.
Mr. Francis was one of the judges for the evening and spoke on behalf of the group who assessed the participants in three categories. Continue reading

Montserrat Rotaract celebrates 25 years of service

BRADES, Montserrat– The Rotaract Club of Montserrat celebrated 25 years of active service to the community with a Charter Anniversary Dinner on the 29th of September 2012.
The club came into being on 5th September 1987 and commemorated the milestone with government officials and former members of the Rotaract. Good Life Night Club was the venue for the evening focused on the theme “Milestones: Celebrating 25 years of service.” Continue reading

RMDF Annual Training Camp 2012 begins Friday

BRADES, Montserrat – The Royal Montserrat Defence Force will be conducting its Annual Training Camp from Friday 31st August to Sunday 9th September 2012.
According to a statement from the RMDF, the focus of this year’s camp will be on one of the RMDF’s core objectives which, is to provide assistance to the Civil Authorities. During the 10 days of training, RMDF members will be exposed to training to prepare them to give assistance to the island of a non-military nature.

Andre West new Chair of the Montserrat Red Cross

BRADES, Montserrat – At the Annual General Meeting of the Montserrat Red Cross on July 31st, Mrs. Anne Thomas stood down as Chair in order to pursue her post graduate studies. Mrs. Thomas has served the Board in this capacity since August 2009. She has made an enormous contribution to the work of the Montserrat Red Cross through her diligence and commitment. She has led the Branch though a period of significant change which has resulted in the Disaster Risk Reduction Programme and the appointment of a full time director. Her experience and enthusiasm will be missed at Board level although we are delighted that she will remain an active volunteer with the Peer Educators and fundraising committee.

Subsequently, at a meeting held on August 9th, the Board elected the Vice Chair, Mr Andre West to be the new Chair of the Montserrat Red Cross. Continue reading

Mamie Ponde turns 104

BRADES, Montserrat – Family and friends gathered today to celebrate the 104th birthday of Mrs. Anne Josephine Ponde known to many as Mamie Ponde, Aunt Baby or Miss Baby formerly of Harris Village.
The Honourable Minister of Health & Social Services Colin Riley visited Mrs. Ponde on Wednesday morning to congratulate her and wish her well. He also presented her with a fruit basket courtesy of the Department of Community Services.
Greetings poured in on the Spirit of Montserrat Facebook page with many remembering her famous plate tart and goat water which she made for the annual Easter Monday Garden Party for the St. George’s Anglican Church where she was an active member. Continue reading

Ministry of Health and Social Services launches Child Protection Booklet

BRADES, Montserrat – The Ministry of Health and Social Services launched its “Child Protection Booklet” aimed at professionals and people working directly with children on Montserrat on Monday, June 4, 2012.
A statement from the ministry, said they joined the United Nations in the observance of “International Day of Innocent Children – Victims of Aggression.” It also celebrates the millions of individuals and organisations working to protect and preserve the rights of children.
The new booklet is envisioned to act as a Policy and Procedural Guideline for use across multiple agencies to educate and raise awareness on Child Abuse. The handbook also includes information on identifying potential signs of abuse in children both physical and behavioural. Continue reading
