UK says the Overseas Territories remain a priority

BRADES, Montserrat – Foreign Secretary, The Rt Hon. William Hague MP told the leaders of the Overseas Territories last week that they remain a priority for the UK Government. Montserrat’s Premier Hon. Reuben T. Meade led a delegation to attend the Overseas Territories Consultative Council (OTCC) on 23-24 November 2011 in London.
Hague was speaking at the opening of the OTCC, which brings together the Premiers, Chief Ministers and other elected representatives from Britain’s Overseas Territories.
“My Ministerial team in the FCO and my colleagues across other Government departments will work tirelessly to ensure that our partnership promotes the best interest of all our citizens and a bright and successful future for the Overseas Territories,” the foreign secretary said. Premier Meade and team in UK for OTCC

BRADES, Montserrat – Premier the Hon. Reuben T. Meade and his team are presently in the UK attending the Pre-OTCC and OTCC sessions with the UK Government.
Premier Meade is accompanied by Financial Secretary Hon. John Skerritt, Attorney General Hon. Esco Henry, and Cabinet Secretary Mrs. Angela Greenaway. His Excellency, The Governor Adrian Davis is also participating in the two-day Overseas Territories Consultative Council which begins on Wednesday at Lancaster House. Director of Public Prosecutions appointed

SWEENEY’S, Montserrat – Kathy-Ann Pyke has been appointed as Montserrat’s first Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

Pyke, who is a Jamaican national, took of her post on Monday October 17th.

The post of a Director of Public Prosecutions is one of the new positions created in the new constitution which was adopted on September 27th.

The director of public prosecutions will be a public officer responsible for instituting and undertaking criminal proceedings against any person before any court on behalf of the government.

Ms Pyke will also have the power to discontinue at any stage criminal proceedings instituted by her or any other person before judgment is delivered on the matter.

The Director of Public Prosecutions shall not be subject to the direction or control of any other person or authority.

During any period when the office of Director of Public Prosecutions is vacant, the Attorney-General shall perform the functions of that office.

Chief Minister Meade attending IMF World Bank Meetings this week

BRADES, Montserrat –Chief Minister, the Honourable Reuben T. Meade is in Washington, D.C. this week to attend and participate in the annual meetings of the World Bank Group and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The chief minister was invited to attend as he presently serves as Chairman of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) Monetary Council.
He said last week, the substantive fiscal issues facing the ECCU, and the fact that several member countries in the ECCU have arrangements with the IMF made it an important time to attend the DC meetings. Continue reading “Chief Minister Meade attending IMF World Bank Meetings this week”

Fin. Sec. Skerritt now Regional Debt Coordination Committee chair

BRADES, Montserrat – The Hon. John Skerritt, Financial Secretary for the Government of Montserrat this month assumes chairmanship of the Regional Debt Coordination Committee (RDCC).

The RDCC was established by the Eastern Caribbean Currency Council on the 25th of October 1996 to facilitate the development and be responsible for the oversight of the operations of an integrated Regional Government Securities Market. This, the RDCC is to accomplish through harmonising the objectives, policies, procedures and rules, which seek to promote the efficient functioning of the market and enhance the overall debt management capabilities of the respective governments.

The main duties of the Chair are to:
1. Provide guidance in the area of policy to the Committee and the Secretariat;
2. Present reports to the Monetary Council on behalf of the RDCC;
