Opportunities For Private Sector

DFID’s Private Sector Adviser to the Government Dr Kato Kimbugwe believes the development of Little Bay and geothermal energy exploration will create tremendous opportunities for the private sector.

Dr Kimbugwe says the private sector, which has been struggling in the ongoing recession would benefit from several spin-offs.

Where is the beef? In other word elaborate on what you are talking about. We do not merely want spinoffs; we want spinoffs that would create major economic growth and development. We need major and dramatic developments in this country. Surely geothermal energy and the development of Little Bay can contribute significantly to economic growth. However, we may have much growth and little development. We would not have meaning development without a development plan. Unfortunately we do not have one. We have a plan for economic growth. For example our plan does not have self sufficiency as it’s major goal. Currently it’s hallmark is one of mendicancy as a development strategy. Such a “development” strategy is antithetical to the very notion of development. Let us remind ourselves that development is multifaceted: The social, sociological, political, ethical, educational, judicial, and legal components of a development strategy/effort, are all indispensible if true development is to be achieved
