SWEENEY’S, Montserrat – Kathy-Ann Pyke has been appointed as Montserrat’s first Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.
Pyke, who is a Jamaican national, took of her post on Monday October 17th.
The post of a Director of Public Prosecutions is one of the new positions created in the new constitution which was adopted on September 27th.
The director of public prosecutions will be a public officer responsible for instituting and undertaking criminal proceedings against any person before any court on behalf of the government.
Ms Pyke will also have the power to discontinue at any stage criminal proceedings instituted by her or any other person before judgment is delivered on the matter.
The Director of Public Prosecutions shall not be subject to the direction or control of any other person or authority.
During any period when the office of Director of Public Prosecutions is vacant, the Attorney-General shall perform the functions of that office.
